On Saturday, September 26th, a group of book enthusiasts gathered at the Ideation Lab for a lively session of “Let’s Read”, our book club that’s built around curiosity, conversation, and the discovery of different perspectives.

This time, we entered the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez through his celebrated short story, The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World. What begins with the mysterious arrival of a drowned stranger on a remote island soon opens the door to a much deeper exploration of perception, identity, and the stories we create around others.

Together, we followed the villagers as they encountered the enormous, unfamiliar man they eventually named Esteban. His arrival stirred a mixture of fascination, insecurity, curiosity, and desire. As the villagers imagined his life and character, they began projecting their own hopes and limitations onto him. In this way, the drowned man became far more than a stranger on their shore; as he turned to be a mirror through which the community could glimpse another version of itself.

From there, the conversation moved beyond the story. We reflected on the assumptions we make about people based on appearances and first impressions and the influence those assumptions can have on our actions and relationships. How much of what we see in another person actually comes from within us? And how much of our identity is shaped by the ideas, expectations, and experiences we inherit from our surroundings?

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the session was discovering just how differently one story could speak to each participant. Every interpretation added another layer to the discussion, connecting Márquez’s fictional village with observations from our own society and everyday lives.

After two engaging hours, we left with more than an appreciation for a fascinating piece of literature. We carried with us questions about perception, identity, community, and the narratives that quietly shape the way we see the world.

Sometimes, a mere stranger washing ashore is enough to make an entire village — and perhaps ourselves — see things differently.
